Dresser and bedside tables makeover

Hello everyone!
Long time no write, right?
Well, as some of you may know in the beginning of June I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl (if I do say so myself!) and these past three months have been very very busy, exciting and full of total happiness for me.
So all this time blogging and let alone diy creations were rather a luxury for me and I have to admit I missed it a little.
Another thing that is considered to be a luxury for me at the moment because of my being a new and inexperienced mom is having a vacation.
But fortunately, I had the chance to go to my hubby's village (which I have mentioned in a previous post) for a few days and to combine a mountain holiday and also some diy activity which proved to be rather relaxing for me.
The diy challenge was quite big:How can someone transform an old 80's bedroom set of dresser and bedside tables into a new shabby chic one with a Laura Ashley style?
And how can someone do this without all the facilities and crafts' shops that he can find in a big city?
As I have previously said Samarina -my husband's village- is located at the Pindos mountains in about 1700 m height and the only store that provides very very few hardware store products is also a mini market(!). (So you get the picture of how difficult it can be to have everything you need for a last minute and total furniture make over).
Luckily white acrylic paint was available at this hardware store/mini market and brushes, sandpaper and decoupage paper and glue were brought from home just in case I decided to be creative.
The things I needed for this transformation were:
Sandpaper
A damp old towel
A small box of white acrylic paint
A big brush for the white acrylic paint
A small brush for decoupage
Decoupage glue
Decoupage decoration paper

First of all I had to use the sandpaper over all the surfaces of the dresser and the bedside tables.The surfaces were not very shinny so this was an easy thing to do.

Then I took away all the dust the sandpaper did with the old and damp towel.
After that hubby and I started to paint the furniture in the quickest and most careless way anyone could paint! (This was the fun part of the make over).

When the paint got dry I did the decoupage:
I cut the patterns I needed and I put glue on top of the furniture, then the paper on it and last some glue above the decoupage patterns.

And voila!
The shabby chic bedroom set of dresser and bedside tables totally restored.

DIY home decoration project

Over a year ago I saw an amazing diy project in Apartment Therapy.I  never got this project out of my mind  but  I've always wanted to do something a little bit different.
Being a fan of interesting quotes or words I really wanted  to make them  part of my home decoration so I could see them every day and get inspired by them.
So one day I came up with  an idea that took me a while to get it done. First of all,I also used a curtain rod that had about 3/4- inch diameter and a couple of big hooks that were screwed into the wall studs so that the curtain rod was secured enough.
Then I used transparent nylon thread fishing string to fasten the white Christmas lights on the curtain rod. I tried to put as many pieces of fishing string as I could so that the lights were very tightly put on the curtain rod.
After that,I used a german silver sheet 0,20 mm and I cut and hammered the four letters of the word I chose to put on the rod.I painted one of the letters  (the letter O) with a red glossy paint and I made a hole in the center of it so I could stick with the a piece of silver plated wire a glass heart bead onto it.

So here it is!My Valentine's statement home diy project.The thing is, I have it  on my wall all year long. It has been part of my living room decoration now.
Cause after all, love is a 24/7 feeling, isn't it?

I didn't have the chance to actually see anyone doing it in front of me, so I was pretty curious and anxious if I could  transform an object into something new only by watching some videos on You tube or Pinterest. Well, I have to admit they have been very helpful and I can say that my first decoupage method has been rather succesful.
This is also my first time that I am presenting to you a diy project and I think it may not be as detailed as it should be.(The thing is I was so absorbed with the whole decoupage process that I didn't take as many photos as I ought to take in order to give you a more accurate, step by step procedure).
Anyway, I think you wouldn't have any problem with the project if you have a prior experience in decoupage but if you don't, then this video will definitely help you as it did in my case.

Then I had to find pieces of paper to put them on the plate.I didn't want to put napkins or photos, I thought of putting some interesting quotes that I find very inspiring and optimistic. Pinterest had been most helpful on this stage I must admit. I found many quotes ( I prefered the ones with a black backround because I thought it would much the (remaining) red color of the plate) there and  I had to find the perfect size for them so they could fit into the plate. So  I did a lot of  copying, pasting and resizing in my computer and that took me quite a long time.

• A pair of scissors
• A decoupage medium (Mod Podge or any other glue that is suitable for decoupage)
• Pieces of paper
• A big flat paint brush
• Glossy spray paint or liquid glass

Now, the decoupage method is pretty easy.You apply a thin coat of decoupage medium (Mod Podge etc) a) on the surface of the object, b) under the piece of paper and  c)  over the top of it.You have to wait for about half an hour in order to let it dry and that's it! If you would like to have  a glossy finish then you could use glossy spray paint or apply a coat of liquid glass.
Of course, I had to use an extra piece of paper in the center of the plate because I wanted to cover the part of the plate that the red paint had come off.  This gave a more vintage  look to the object and I think it kind of matched with the whole interesting quotes concept.
