Dresser and bedside tables makeover

Hello everyone!
Long time no write, right?
Well, as some of you may know in the beginning of June I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl (if I do say so myself!) and these past three months have been very very busy, exciting and full of total happiness for me.
So all this time blogging and let alone diy creations were rather a luxury for me and I have to admit I missed it a little.
Another thing that is considered to be a luxury for me at the moment because of my being a new and inexperienced mom is having a vacation.
But fortunately, I had the chance to go to my hubby's village (which I have mentioned in a previous post) for a few days and to combine a mountain holiday and also some diy activity which proved to be rather relaxing for me.
The diy challenge was quite big:How can someone transform an old 80's bedroom set of dresser and bedside tables into a new shabby chic one with a Laura Ashley style?
And how can someone do this without all the facilities and crafts' shops that he can find in a big city?
As I have previously said Samarina -my husband's village- is located at the Pindos mountains in about 1700 m height and the only store that provides very very few hardware store products is also a mini market(!). (So you get the picture of how difficult it can be to have everything you need for a last minute and total furniture make over).
Luckily white acrylic paint was available at this hardware store/mini market and brushes, sandpaper and decoupage paper and glue were brought from home just in case I decided to be creative.
The things I needed for this transformation were:
Sandpaper
A damp old towel
A small box of white acrylic paint
A big brush for the white acrylic paint
A small brush for decoupage
Decoupage glue
Decoupage decoration paper

First of all I had to use the sandpaper over all the surfaces of the dresser and the bedside tables.The surfaces were not very shinny so this was an easy thing to do.

The before part -sorry for the blurry photo :( 

Then I took away all the dust the sandpaper did with the old and damp towel.
After that hubby and I started to paint the furniture in the quickest and most careless way anyone could paint! (This was the fun part of the make over).

When the paint got dry I did the decoupage:
I cut the patterns I needed and I put glue on top of the furniture, then the paper on it and last some glue above the decoupage patterns.

And voila!
The shabby chic bedroom set of dresser and bedside tables totally restored.

  I believe the result was quite satisfactory given the fact I had too few materials and time to make this transformation.

Summer in Sithonia

Long time no posting, right?
Well, you know how September is ...A month full of new goals and priorities as well as lots of obligations and plans that summer and its low rythms has left unfulfilled and delayed.
To tell you the truth, I've always thought of September as a  fresh new start in every year much more than the New Year's Day. I mean, summer is a period that I would get some rest and at the same time make some sort of thinking of all the good and bad things that happened the year before. So in this sense, September is the beginning of a new era and a starting point for new things.
Anyway, before I tell you about my plans for this new 'year' I believe it's time I told you about some of the things I did last summer.
I've had a great time visiting one of the places that here in Thessaloniki is supposed to be a very close and ordinary destination for weekends and short trips. Yep, my greek followers guessed it right...
 I've spent my summer holidays in Halkidiki (Sithonia to be more exact) and although I'm a great fan of Aegean islands such as Cyclades that have a traditional flair I, once more, got overwhelmed by the wild beauty of a paradise that is practically one step away from home.
 Pines and olive trees, golden sandy beaches with lukewarm, crystal clear waters, amazing sunsets and great food are some of the assets that this blessed place has to offer.

The photos describe it so much better than I do actually, so my rambling is over...

Shopbevel jewelry design contest #2

Hope you're doing fine.
As for me, it was such a pleasant surprise to find some days ago in my Etsy inbox an email from one of the Shopbevel people inviting me to another contest the site is hosting which is called Mykonos Blue Design Challenge.
So without any hesitation, I have just submitted one of my designs which I thought would fit this certain jewelry design contest.
After all, the first experience was far more than positive for me.I mean,the whole process from voting till the final result announcement was very exciting and even though I didn't get to be the winner (As far as voting is concerned I was rated at about the 10th position in approximately 135 entries) I really enjoyed each and every minute of the procedure.
My new submission is this one:

It is a handmade stained glass boat pendant in cobalt and light blue,already listed in my Etsy shop and you can vote for it HERE.

My be♥d Anafi

Τhe first time I have been to Anafi island was centuries ago.For those of you who are not Greek or have never heard of it I will give you a first hint.
It is very close to one of the most famous islands in the world, Santorini and also one of the Cyclades islands which have taken their name from the shape they form (that of a circle-κύκλος in greek language) around the sacred island of the ancient Greeks, Delos.
Well, that's enough with the historic data, now let's go back to Anafi....
Just imagine the island of Santorini with a town (chora) situated so very high on the mountain peak but  less crowded and ''civilized'', beaches that are more friendly to the visitor than Santorini's volcanic beaches are.
Then, try to think how such a beautiful island would be without all these night clubs,fancy restaurants and luxurious hotels.
Yep, now you get the idea of how Anafi is really like.
In fact, it is an island that ''the less is more'' attitude is coming to life.
It has everything you need, especially if you are a fan of small places that provide only the necessary for your summer vacation: A few sandy beaches, a town (well, that is an overstatement for the island of Anafi,given the fact that it is inhabited by not more than 300 people during winter time), and some small, family-run restaurants that serve the most delicious homemade dishes you could taste.

I have visited the island for the second time some days ago.It was such a pleasant surprise for me to find out that even though so many years have passed and Anafi has been slightly touched by the hand of tourism and civlization it still gives you the same uncanny, almost otherwordly feeling.
 Moreover,the human factor certainly adds a lot to the equation: Friendly,warm local people would welcome you with a smile and would remind you of a more careless period in Greece, when the crisis and all were not part of our everyday life.
In fact, in this tiny corner of the Aegean sea everything is so simple and minimal that maybe you get to see what is really significant and meaningful in life or maybe you are taught a lesson: you see how people learn to live with less by taming the elements of nature and how they make the most of the small gifts that are given to them.
Although I  had the luck and  pleasure of being around quite a lot of summer destinations, especially here in Greece, one thing is pretty certain: Anafi will always have a special place in my heart.

It has everything you need, especially if you are a fan of small places that provide only the necessary for your summer vacation: A few sandy beaches, a town (well, that is an overstatement for the island of Anafi,given the fact that it is inhabited by not more than 300 people during winter time), and some small, family-run restaurants that serve the most delicious homemade dishes you could taste.

I have visited the island for the second time some days ago.It was such a pleasant surprise for me to find out that even though so many years have passed and Anafi has been slightly touched by the hand of tourism and civlization it still gives you the same uncanny, almost otherwordly feeling.
 Moreover,the human factor certainly adds a lot to the equation: Friendly,warm local people would welcome you with a smile and would remind you of a more careless period in Greece, when the crisis and all were not part of our everyday life.
In fact, in this tiny corner of the Aegean sea everything is so simple and minimal that maybe you get to see what is really significant and meaningful in life or maybe you are taught a lesson: you see how people learn to live with less by taming the elements of nature and how they make the most of the small gifts that are given to them.
Although I  had the luck and  pleasure of being around quite a lot of summer destinations, especially here in Greece, one thing is pretty certain: Anafi will always have a special place in my heart.

In fact, it is an island that ''the less is more'' attitude is coming to life.

Well, I know I have not been very steady  these days as far as blogging activity is concerned.As I have said in a previous post, you can blame it all on the Greek summer.There has been an incredible heatwave practically all July long here in Greece and it seems that the temperature will be at its peek this first week of August as well. So I think it is pretty tough being focused on writing and finding themes for blogging when all you wanna do is lying on the beach and enjoying summer.
I will be spending these following days at the island of Skiathos which is one of the Sporades island and is situated in the northern of the Aegean island.I guess these short holidays is an extra excuse for not blogging.But  hopefully I will return with lots of photos (by the way this island is absolutely beautiful -a must go/see!) so I promise I will post lots of them and make up for all my absense these past days.
